Architecture – Past forward: progress, identity and civic spaces

For this De Ruyter event focusing on architecture we are joined by Edward Marchand. Edward Marchand is Associate Director of Architecture firm Bennetts Associates. In London they are probably best known for many of the iconic developments in the King’s Cross area.

Edward will present some of Bennetts Associates’ recent projects, focusing on the King’s Cross area with its unique history and characterful legacy of industrial heritage. Framed within his personal interests he’ll share his views on how renovation can drive progress, how the hybrid of old and new can generate a sense of place, of belonging and identity, and give us a new range of civic spaces that will attract new users and promote the exchange of ideas.

Midland Goods Shed - inside

“If you look at all the exciting things that are happening here – the renovation of King’s Cross – it really is one of the most exciting places in the world.” (Roly Keating, Chair, Knowledge Quarter)

Edward gained a Masters in Architecture and Structural Engineering at the University of Ghent in Belgium before embarking on a Post-Graduate in Architecture and Urban Design at The Berlage in Amsterdam. In 2006 he moved to London and joined Bennetts Associates Architects, designing cultural projects for universities, local authorities and a national media organisation. Over the past few years he has been leading the transformation of two Grade II listed buildings, belonging to the industrial heritage forming the heart of the King’s Cross regeneration area and the surrounding Knowledge Quarter.

Dutch courage – Women in advertising

Women in advertising – a fringe event during Advertising Week Europe 2017

Women represent over 80% of all consumer purchasing decisions. From buying a house or a holiday to buying healthcare or pharmaceuticals, women control the majority of purchases. Half the products marketed to men are ultimately purchased by women.

Women in Advertising - Madelien Scholten - Helena Heras Delgado
If women pay play such a decisive role in these decisions, why do not they not make up the majority of the workforce in advertising? And if they did, would that mean the end for sexist advertising?

We are joined by Art Director Madelien Scholten and Copywriter Helena Heras Delgado of ad agency Publicis London. With their impressive experience of working at major advertising agencies and with a client list with some of the world’s biggest brands we will explore some of the challenges women face in advertising.

Madelien Scholten and Helena Heras Delgado have been a creative duo since 2014. Previously working for WE ARE PI, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, BBH, Mother and Creature they now work for Publicis London.

The bar opens at 18:00, the talk starts at 19:00 and entrance is free but please RSVP via Eventbrite!

Women in Advertising - Madelien Scholten - Helena Heras Delgado
